Jackson was in an automobile accident Saturday night at 9:23pm. He was driving his girlfriend’s car and was tboned on Taylor Road in front of McDonalds. The impact hit his drivers side door. Thankfully they both had on their seat belts. Bella is fine minus a concussion. Jackson was taken by ambulance to Baptist South. Upon exam he has a broken pelvis, contusion to his lungs (from the airbags) and a liver laceration. He also bit his tongue pretty hard on impact causing a nasty laceration on either side. Around 7:30am Sunday morning he was transported to Children’s in Birmingham due to his age and severity of the injuries. Once we arrived at Children’s they determined he would have surgery to repair the pelvis at UAB. Surgery began at 7am Monday. Surgery lasted 3 hours, it entailed an incision in the right hip to put a screw in to stabilize his sacrum. He also had another large incision on his abdomen where the placed a plate around his pubis/pubic symphasis and several screws. That is where the pelvis was broken most. He was able to avoid having an X Fix placed which what was originally planned. He did have a partially collapsed right lung which was repaired and a laceration on the liver which is being monitored. No damage to his bladder or urethra! He does have a drain from his abdomen which is blood collecting in a reservoir from the surgery. The nurse said it is very common after a surgery like his. It prevents the blood from pooling in his abdomen. That will be taken out when the blood output lessens. We will remain at UAB for post op care and begin physical therapy. We will be in the hospital at least 3-5 days maybe more depending on how he tolerates the pain and PT. He will be non weight bearing for at least 6-12 weeks afterwords, using a wheelchair. This will be a very long road for all of us. Having to make our home wheelchair accessible. Reasoning behind this page is to ask for help from our village with meals and help caring for Jackson post op. Unfortunately life doesn’t stop because of trauma.
