Matt’s journey began with a trip to the ER on a Saturday night, which led to emergency surgery to remove a mass blocking his colon. While his immediate pain is gone, the surgery resulted in an ostomy bag, and pathology confirmed our biggest fear: Matt has stage IV colon cancer that has spread to his liver. While this diagnosis is not what we expected, we have been overwhelmed by the incredible outpouring of love, meals, childcare offers, and steady encouragement from our friends and family. We are in complete awe of our support system and look forward to kicking its butt together as a team! We created this space to share updates in one central place and let you know what we need along the way. Many of you have asked how to help, and right now, any financial support or gift cards will go directly toward offsetting medical expenses, childcare, and everyday essentials—especially meals on the days when our brains are fried and takeout keeps things moving. We love you all so much. Please feel free to call, text, or message Katie directly. We want to give Matt the space and energy to focus on fighting this the only way he knows how: stubbornly. Note: We have two oncologist appointments over the next weeks so we will have more info and plans as he heals up from the surgery!
Meal support is deeply appreciated, but because Matt’s dietary needs are still being determined, grocery and restaurant gift cards are especially helpful right now. For anyone who would prefer to cook or send food, please keep meals simple and package the components separately whenever possible so the family can mix and match based on what everyone is able to eat. Both freshly prepared meals and freezer-friendly meals are welcome and appreciated. Please label everything clearly with the contents and date. ALL MUST BE PEANUT-FREE! Family-friendly favorites include: • Pizza • Plain pasta with sauce and meatballs packaged separately • Cooked or shredded chicken • Chicken cutlets or tenders • Mac and cheese or mac and cheese bites • Mozzarella sticks • Simple sides such as rice, potatoes or vegetables, packaged separately The goal is simply to make mealtimes a little easier during an overwhelming time. Whether you send a gift card, a ready-to-enjoy meal or something for the freezer, your support will be genuinely appreciated.
