A week ago our mother, Paula Strongheart, suffered a burn at her home in Santa Fe. She is so lucky as it could have been much worse, but she's a quick thinker and acted fast on her feet to put the fire out and call for help. She went to St. Vincent's in Santa Fe and was transferred to UNM where she spent the night. No burns in her throat or ear canal but her face and ear have 2nd degree burns. Scarring is still TBD as everything is still healing. My mom's injury hits hard for me. As many know, I was severely burned as an infant in a camp fire and suffered 3rd degree burns on 33% of my body. I lost my toes on my right foot and partial on my left and have had a lifetime of complications and pain as a result. There is a sadistic kind of irony in her injury for both of us as she was my caretaker at the hospital. For her to relive this pain physically, emotionally and spiritually feels overwhelming to me. My mom lives a simple life in Santa Fe where she has called home for over 50 years. Her needs are small but help is essential during this healing time. I thank all of you for your care and assistance.
Please coordinate with me what feels most supportive for you to do for our dear sweet mother. All kinds of donations are welcome. Gift cards, food, groceries, prepared meals or meals delivered, cash, flowers, time, a foot massage. Do what makes you feel good! She needs some new pillows and is requesting a TV so she can sit up in bed and watch TV.
