Supporting John Ripka & Family

New Hope, MN

Story

Hi everyone, thank you for being here. On December 28, 2025 John Ripka, a.k.a. Ripper, had a massive stroke and was in the ICU for five days. The stroke caused a complete loss of movement of the right side of his body and significant aphasia, which is a language disorder from brain damage that impairs speaking, understanding, reading, and writing. Thankfully, due to a mix of outstanding medical care and John's strong will, he survived the stroke and has spent the last month doing in-patient rehab at North Memorial Hospital. While the last four weeks have been filled with sadness, uncertainty and fatigue, the Barthel/Ripka family is now excited and hopeful because John is coming home! This Tuesday, January 27th, John is scheduled to be discharged and will continue with his physical, occupational and speech therapy on an outpatient basis. While John looks like the same gentle giant we all know and love, conversation with him will be different as a common symptom of aphasia is difficulty finding correct words when talking. It is important to note his intelligence and hearing have NOT been impacted :) Recovery for stroke patients varies but significant gains can be made over the first year with consistent therapy, patience and practice. This is where your help is crucial to John's recovery. As John and his family continues to navigate their new normal and the recovery process, there are a few areas where additional support would truly help ease their burdens and allow them to focus on one another. Right now the goal will be on consistent support for the family. If you are willing and able to help, this page will outline meal requests (home cooked and/or gift cards), transportation assistance to and from therapy and financial donations as John is currently on indefinite leave from work. Thank you again for your love and support for John and his family!

Special Notes

The family is requesting no visitors for the first couple of days as John transitions back home. After that please reach out to Tina to coordinate a visit with John. John is also able to read and appreciates text messages but is not able to reply independently yet. January 25, 2025 - John's therapy schedule is still being determined and transportation needs will be updated within the next week. Financial donations are greatly appreciated as John is currently on indefinite leave from work and the medical bills will be substantial. Tina's Venmo link is posted at the top right of this page or you can donate via gofundme here: https://gofund.me/6715b0c59.
