This journey started in April, when I went for a routine mammogram. They found an "abnormal spot" saying it might be nothing, but that I needed additional imagining. In May I had a breast sonogram and they said "Yeah, it looks like something, but it might be nothing. We need a biopsy" ...multiple biopsies and MRIs later I was officially diagnosed with Invasive Ductal Carcinoma in mid July. There were multiple tumors on each breast all showing different pathologies. It was listed as Stage 2 based on the size of the largest tumor and the fact that it had NOT spread to lymph nodes (something I am very grateful for!) I want to stress here that through all of this I had not felt any lumps (even after I knew it was there) or had any symptoms. Had I not gone for a regular screening I would likely not have know it was there until is was much further along. So ladies, schedule your screening! After more testing and the collaboration of my care team (shout to St. Francis Cancer Center!) a treatment plan came together and in September I finally started treatment. On Sept 2nd I had a bilaterally mastectomy followed by a 4 week recovery. Then on Friday, Oct 9th I started the first of 6 cycles of chemotherapy. This will be followed by additional endocrine infusions and oral medications for up to 5 years. It will be a process, but the prognosis is very good and full recovery without recurrence is expected. I am confidant that this whole journey is in the Lord's hands, and overall I feel a great peace about it. We are taking all things one day at time, trusting that He will hold us through it all. Thank you for being part of the village we have been blessed with!
Up to this point I have shared very little about my journey beyond a small group of family and friends, but we am blessed to be surround by so many people who love and care about us that I wanted to keep everyone up to date. I am thankful for all the love and prayers that have been expressed already. Please do not feel obligated to sign up for any additional support, but I did add those since some people have asked. This way it can all be in one place, which is much easier to manage. I will do my best to update as I am able, but also please don't hesitate to reach out directly to me or Joey as well. Text is probably best. We love you all!
