Story by mom, Mandi: This isnt the 1 month milestone I thought I would be sharing with everyone. For those of you that dont know, Kenzie Mae is 1 month old today. She was absolutely healthy and thriving until September 15th. I had noticed all day she was breathing really fast and basically panting. Everything in me said this isnt normal something is wrong. I took her to MCR, they confirmed her breathing was very fast and abnormal. We were transfered and admitted to PVH Pedicatric care via ambulance at 12am on the 16th. 4am she spiked a fever of 101.2. At 4pm on the 16th she began to have seizures, multiple an hour. We were transfered over to the neurology team in the NICU. We had an Amazing doctor named Dr. Paisley, she determined Kenzie was in critical conditions and need to be transfered to Childrens hospital to their PICCU (Pediatrics Intesive Critical Care Unit) STAT!. An hour later we were transported via yet an other ambulance because it was storming so we couldn't fly via flight for life as we had planed. The evening of the 17th around 11pm she was diagnosed. Herpes Simplex Virus Meningitis HSV-2. For those of you that dont know what this is, HSV 2 meningitis is a rare infection of the membranes (meninges) that cover the brain and spinal cord, caused by the herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). My baby was extreamly sick, and fighting for her life at just 3 weeks old!. She was having seizures that lasted upwards to 7 minutes long still multiple an hour till through trial and error we found a med that was able to stop her seizures thank GOD!. On September 19th Kenzie was officially 24 hours Seizure Free and graduated from the PICCU to Pedicatric Regular care! by the grace of God and so many prayers. We arent out of the woods yet today will be a big test for Miss Kenzie, she is being taken off the Seizure medication shes been on and been Seizure free for 3 days, and monitored via EEG for the next 24 hours. This will tell us if shes going to need Seizure meds going home. We still have to finish the treatment for the HSV 2 meningitis and thats a 21 day antibiotic. She will have further testing done after her 21 day treatment. This will include a second spinal puncture (spinal tap) a second CT scan, a Second cranial ultrasound, and a second MRI. All these tests will be her ticket to going home and her prognosis for how this will effect her little brain long term. HSV 1 and HSV 2 are very common viruses most of us carry and a lot of us like myself are asymptomatic and dont know we even have it. Unfortunately Kenzie did receive this virus during birth. All the more stress in DO NOT KISS OR TOUCH THE SKIN OF A NEWBORN BABY! IT CAN MAKE THEM LIFE THREATENING SICK!!. If you've made it this far, you are the real ones!. As most of you know I never post my kids on here or post in general really. In this situation Kenzie is facing so much going ahead that determines her little future and she needs all the prayers she can get, so I am posting her story and her pictures so yall can pray over her picture and lift her up in your prayers if you choose to. TIA A heartbroken, scared, but VERY strong Momma!.
Anything will help for this family. No diet restrictions. This is the first time Daddy has been home alone with 3 other kids for more than a day without mom. They have a 7, 5 and 3 year old at home. Any gift cards or homemade meals would be extremely grateful for this family.
