On Thursday, July 9, 2026, what began as a beautiful afternoon on the waters of Newport Beach became an unexpected journey for Andrew and Kathryn. While paddling with their dragon boat team in the Back Bay, Andrew suddenly experienced an intense headache. Moments later, he told Kathryn they needed to return to shore immediately as the pain was rapidly worsening. Shortly after reaching land, Andrew lost consciousness. Within minutes, paramedics rushed him to Hoag Hospital, where doctors discovered he had suffered a rare and severe brain bleed. The hours that followed were filled with uncertainty, difficult decisions, and heartfelt prayer. Surgeons worked through the night to stop the bleeding. By God's grace, the procedure was successful. They discovered that the cause was not a typical aneurysm but an extremely rare fistula—one so uncommon that even the surgeon remarked he had never encountered one quite like it. Using remarkable skill and ingenuity, he was able to seal the bleed using surgical glue. Kathryn then smiled and said Andrew, a lifelong mechanic, would appreciate such creative problem-solving, it brought a brief moment of light into an otherwise difficult night. Kathryn was lovingly cared for by dear friends Diane and Wayne, who stayed by her side and welcomed her into their home for the night, allowing her a few precious hours of rest while Andrew remained under sedation. The following morning, doctors gradually reduced Andrew's medications to begin assessing his neurological condition. At this early stage, there were few signs that could indicate what lies ahead. The medical team has gently reminded the family that recovery from this kind of injury is often measured not in hours or days, but in weeks and months. Much remains unknown, and each day will bring new information. Through it all, Kathryn has shown remarkable courage, faith, and love. Like anyone walking this path, she experiences moments of hope intertwined with tears, fear, and deep uncertainty. Yet she has been surrounded by an extraordinary outpouring of prayer, compassion, and encouragement from family, friends, and community. Every prayer, every message, and every act of kindness has been a tremendous source of strength. As we continue this journey together, we invite you to walk beside Andrew and Kathryn in whatever way you feel called. We have created this CaringBridge site to provide medical updates, coordinate meals and practical support, and offer a place where we can surround this family with love, hope, and prayer. Most of all, we ask that you continue holding Andrew in your prayers. May God's healing presence surround him, guide every physician and caregiver, strengthen Kathryn and their family, and fill each new day with renewed hope. We trust that even in this season of uncertainty, they are held in the loving embrace of God's grace. If you are reading this, you are already an important part of this bridge of hope. Thank you for walking this journey with us.
