Support Rachel Kelly's Journey with a Service Dog

Story

My friend made me a service dog GoFundMe. Any donations and shares would be great if you can! I'll list the story here: Hello! My name is Summer, and I thank you for taking the time to read and understand my friend’s situation. My friend’s name is Rachel Kelly, and she was born with a medical condition called Ullrich Muscular Dystrophy. She could not walk since the age of four; for nearly all of her life, she has used a wheelchair and has been unable to branch out into the world physically past her house. The disease causes her muscle weakness, contracted joints, fatigue, and weakened respiratory issues. Recently, two of Rachel’s grandmothers were put in nursing homes. They lived on the street right next door and were always involved in Rachel’s life. Reina, her dad’s mother, was a constant presence and helped out daily when no one else could. With her and her mother’s mom gone, life has proven quite difficult for the family. Their absence has impacted Rachel and her anxiety to a great extent. I am an attendant for Rachel, and I believe she has a fantastic support group in the form of her family and friends. However, her father has the same condition as her, with severe circumstances. He is tracheostomized, bedridden, and on a ventilator full-time. Rachel’s mother is the primary caregiver for Rachel and her dad. Being physically responsible for both of them is a daunting lifestyle, and it adds significant stress and limitations on all parties involved. Her dad’s health has worsened in severity after a recent surgery, making their situation harder to handle. Rachel is doing her best to cope, but she is dealing with the hardship along with the rest of her family. For this reason, I am looking to the community for help in funding a service dog that can provide her with emotional, medical, and physical support, helping to alleviate some of the burden from her mother. A trained service dog could assist her with mobility by retrieving items, opening doors, pressing buttons, and turning light switches on and off. Furthermore, it would help her to psychologically manage her anxiety and depression stemming from her medical situation. They can perform deep pressure therapy, alert her to high heart rates, and learn to locate people if Rachel is in an emergency. All of these tasks are significant and would improve her daily life. While I am aware some nonprofits will place a dog with someone for free, the waitlist is extensive, and many require you to travel to their facility to meet and engage with the dog. Rachel cannot travel long distances due to her medical and family circumstances, so she is speaking with reputable service dog organizations that can accommodate bringing the dog to her. All funds are allocated towards the service dog and its training. Any potential leftover donations will be used for its veterinary care, food, supplies, and additional training. I appreciate everyone willing to read, share her story, or donate! I cannot thank you enough for your support. I will provide updates regarding Rachel’s journey as they come. Please stay tuned!
