My father has been staying with us over the past 14 months. He had untreated diabetes and was as stubborn as a mule. The last few months, he started sleeping more and more to where he started not even getting up or eating. I finally was able to get help to get him to go to the hospital, where we thought they were treating his diabetes and getting his blood sugar regulated, but that took a nosedive for the worst. After a week in, they did an mri and discovered colon cancer that had perforated his bowel. They did an immediate surgery to repair and remove sections of bowel. Then they had to keep him sedated and open until Monday afternoon for another surgery to see if a portion of bowel was living or dying. It was viable and we were hopeful, however, the doctor said the cancer was so extensive that it was just everywhere and at any time it could cause a blockage or tear. He had to have a colostomy bag. It produced for one day then stopped altogether. They feared another blockage had already happened and he was far too weak to handle another surgery. This wad the worst week of our lives. Going in and out of the hospital and seeing him worse than the day before. He ended up going into hospice for the last 2 days and on 6/7 at around 10:20 he took his final 3 breaths and exhaled. I am seeking a tiny bit of relief this week as I'm navigating such a huge loss. Help with prepared meals would be amazing during this time.
