Help My Family During My Recovery

W
Story

Here is what my husband wrote: Hi my name is Bill Harker. On June 19th, my wife survived a devastating car accident that doctors say she is lucky to have lived through. A truck ran over the driver's side of her vehicle, causing catastrophic damage. While the outside of the car may not appear completely destroyed, the force of the impact snapped the axle in half, split the front tire, and deployed every airbag in the vehicle. Tiffany's legs were pinned inside the car during the crash. Since the accident, Tiffany has been experiencing numbness and tingling in her legs, tremors in her arms, weakness in her hands, painful muscle spasms, and burning, ripping sensations throughout her body. She currently requires assistance just to stand, walk, or get out of bed and is unable to perform many of the everyday task. Even eating has become a challenge. The OT doctors have given her adaptive eating devices. PT is working with her to learn how to use her legs and walk again. The officer thinks from the scene and reports she might have had a small stroke. The doctors said even though it didn’t show on scans, it’s possible. Doctors have warned that Tiffany faces a long road ahead filled with recovery, physical therapy and occupational therapy 3 hours a day, 5 days a week, and medical appointments once she is released. She is also dealing with blurred vision and bruising throughout her body, and possible tears to the ligaments in her chest causing significant pain. She is currently relying on pain medication every 6 to 8 hours as she begins the difficult process of healing and relearning how to use her body and walk. The accident has also created a financial strain for us. Our vehicle has been declared a total loss. Luckily we have another vehicle. Tiffany is currently unable to work and is applying for Oregon Paid Leave benefits, but we are not sure when those payments will begin. In the meantime, bills continue to arrive. Adding to the challenge, Tiffany is still currently hospitalized approximately an hour from home and 40 minutes from my workplace, creating a travel expenses for gas and transportation while I balance work, caring for the kids, and supporting Tiffany through her recovery. UPDATE: As of July 5, 2026 my wife Tiffany is still in OHSU hospital in Oregon. Tiffany has developed knots on her legs, which are hematomas. The doctors say her body should absorb the blood back into her body. Please extra prayers she doesn’t get a clot. This week the plan is for her to be transferred to a rehabilitation center that is another hour away. Also where she will be does not allow overnight visits. This will now mean she will be right at 2 hours from home. This is adding more stress to us and definitely my wife. With the new distance it will mean we can only see her on weekends depending on funds. We also have to pay out of pocket since we missed the cut off for insurance and that doesn’t pick up till September/October. Even then we will have to pay whatever needs to be paid for prior to insurance kicking in. The investigation is still on going with the insurance company, police, and other drivers insurance. We are grateful a place has accepted Tiffany, we are just worried how we can afford this. I have told my wife don’t worry, focus on recovery and that it will all work out. Mind you I am trying to figure how this will work out with one income right now, but I don’t won’t to put that stress on my wife. Once Tiffany is more stable and can walk and use her body more independently where she can come home she will then need mobility devices such as a shower seat, stand up walker, bed table, and who knows what else right now. My wife is determined and stubborn and tells me she’s going be back to work before August. As much as I lover her determination, I’m not sure how possible that is. She doesn’t want the weight of everything on me. We have no family here. We just moved to Oregon. Her body is tired and the muscle spasms are more intense everyday with PT and OT. I hate seeing her in so much pain. Even though we hate asking for help, right now we need some. We are asking for help to ease some of the burdens we are facing during this difficult time. Donations will help cover: • Gas and transportation costs • Hotel stays for when we visit (to help cut back on the back in forth drive.) • Groceries and household necessities • Monthly bills and utilities • Medical expenses and recovery needs • Physical and occupational therapy costs • Medication costs No amount is too small, and every share, prayer, donation, and message of support means more than words can express. Tiffany has a long journey ahead, but she will not do it alone. Thank you for helping our family focus on healing and recovery during this difficult time. Thank you
