Update 5:00 AM Thursday 10/9-has been in surgery at KU Med for about 5 hours Update 8AM 10/9-They had to remove part of his aorta, it swelled so much beyond repair so they had to do a graft. They started laparoscopic and had to switch to open heart emergently because his BP tanked. They put him on ecmo and found another clot that was unrelated in his abdomen. He’s headed to the vascular OR now so they can see what can be done for the abdominal clot and lack of blood supply to his legs and kidney. Update 12:30 PM 10/9: Dad is out of his second surgery, doing as well as we can hope and looks like blood flow is back to abdomen and legs. Might need a third surgery because they found another vascular issue with left arm but they want him to recover a few days. He is still intubated and sedated. Update 4:00 PM 10/9: Dad is going in for a third surgery to restore blood flow to his arm. We got to see him for a few minutes and he looks better than expected. Still intubated and sedated. Update 9:00 PM 10/9: just got done talking to the nurse after his 3rd surgery and she said they woke him and he had feeling everywhere and was able to wiggle toes and fingers and answer questions. So relieved to hear that! Update 10/10 12:45pm: He won't be extubated today and they are starting dialysis. It should be a temporary dialysis, kidneys have acutely been put through a lot as well as getting some damage from the infarction in the right kidney. They will support the kidney function with this and then see how his labs do. 10/10 5:30 PM: We saw Dad about 5:30 and they had dialed back sedation to test his nerve function. They said it was the best it has been since surgery. At the time, he was prepped for dialysis but the machine was en route. Unsurprisingly, he didn't tolerate less sedation well, not that he was very alert but it was good to see him a little responsive, and we left so they could sedate as do dialysis. We'll go back first thing tomorrow. 10/11 1:30 PM: The nurse has taken him off of the majority of his sedation and he is breathing mostly on his own now, but is still intubated. He responds to commands to squeeze hands and wiggle toes and will briefly open his eyes but is still quite sleepy. 10/11 9:30 PM: Connor tucked Dad in for the night. He had just been through a fair amount of care that the night nurse Megan described him as not appreciating very much, and she said that she felt he was still calming down post care. Despite this, he looked much more comfortable than he did earlier when he was twitchy. He was pretty alert, made a lot of eye contact, and held his hand while he was there. Nurse Megan said she was going to turn down the lights soon so he could rest. 10/12 10:30 AM: Doesn’t look like they are going to extubate today. They had to get him up to 60% oxygen overnight, he’s down to 50% now. His chest x-ray looks a little worse than yesterday, but they said the plan is to push harder for extubation tomorrow. They are wanting Kasha (his nurse) to start tube feeding today but dad is gagging a lot with the tube so she doesn’t want to make it worse. She’s going to talk to them and see if they want to sedate him a bit more so she can feed him or what they want to do so he isn’t so uncomfortable. All of your prayers and well wishes are so appreciated ❤
