Four years ago, Ellen woke in the middle of the night in excruciating pain and was promptly taken to the ER. What ensued has been a four-year long journey of recovery and setbacks, questions with answers followed by more questions, challenges, and more. Through guillan-barre syndrome, a stay in the Neuro-ICU, and now challenges in treating Lyme, Babesiosis, and debilitating POTS, Ellen and Brandon have been mentally, physically, spiritually, and financially put through the wringer. During all of this, Brandon has been Ellen's primary caregiver and support, along with the help and love of community. On Wednesday August 9, 2025, Brandon went to the ER after a month of experiencing chest pain with exertion. After being dismissed at first, during a second visit to the ER, an interventionist decided to do a cardiac cath, and 2 severe arterial blockages were discovered at the age of 33. He had a 99% blockage in his LAD and two stents were placed. Despite cardiac damage and loss of cardiac function, doctors are hopeful that he will have a full recovery of his function over the next few months. In the meantime is where we come in. We are so grateful for their friends selflessly taking the week of 7/13 to get them set up and on their feet, and want to set them up with organized ongoing support to ensure that their time and energy is spent on healing. It takes a village, and this is our opportunity to be the village. Ellen is still undergoing treatment and experiencing severe symptoms and challenges. She still has a port, experiences fainting spells, frequent doctors visits, and infusions. At the same time, Brandon needs rest and calm to optimize his recovery from this ordeal. The Coates Family could use support not just with meals, but the functioning of their home and daily lives. We know there is such a wonderful community of people who care so deeply for them and want to help however they can, so I (Kathryn) have created this page for us to help meet their needs. Ways we can show up for them include doing laundry, dishes, tidying, grocery shopping, cooking, walking George (their wonderful doodle), and more. If you find yourself able and available to accompany them on this journey, we would be so grateful.
Because of complex dietary needs and restrictions, Ellen and Brandon have been connected to a meal service to help them meet their grocery and meal needs. Assistance in the functioning of their home, groceries, getting meals ready, helping with George are where their main needs are. GrubHub, UberEats etc are unfortunately not helpful due to their dietary needs, but if you'd like to help in that way, feel free to donate via venmo towards the costs of their meals: @bcoates52 If you'd like to do a grocery or meal drop off, assist with laundry etc on a day that is not listed here, please reach out and let us know and we can easily add it! Please NO sick visitors or assistors. Ellen continues to be seriously immunocompromised and has a port, and Brandon's condition requires health and safety from people who are currently ill.
