Our mom is currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer and has completed two rounds of chemotherapy. The treatments have been very difficult on her physically, and she is experiencing significant side effects including severe fatigue, neuropathy, loss of appetite, weakness, hair loss, incontinence, and skin breakdown from prolonged time in bed. She has also had multiple ER visits during this process. At this stage, she needs regular check-ins every 2–3 hours throughout the day, even if it’s just a quick phone call to make sure she is okay. In-person visits are especially helpful when possible. She often needs encouragement to eat and drink, help preparing simple meals, assistance with bathing and getting dressed, monitoring of bed sores/skin irritation, and general companionship and support. Living in Custer makes medical appointments especially challenging due to the long drives to and from the hospital. A nurse will be visiting daily at 2:00 PM for at least an hour to assist with care needs. Our mom has spent her life working hard for her family and caring for others. She is the mother of five children and grandmother to thirteen grandchildren, and now we are trying to surround her with the same care and support she has always given to others. Because only one of her daughters, Alisha, lives nearby, we are coordinating care among family and friends to help make sure she is not carrying this burden alone. Thank you for being willing to help in whatever way you can — whether that’s a visit, a meal, a phone call, transportation help, errands, or simply checking in so she feels supported and cared for during this difficult season. We will post need requests on this page and please feel free to volunteer for any slot you see open.
Please be sure you are feeling healthy and practice excellent hand hygiene when visiting as Viga is very susceptible to infections at this time.
