In Honor of Mama Somie: A Final Farewell Beloved mother of Odon Roa

South San Francisco, CA

Story

Mama Somie was the kind of woman whose love you felt before she ever said a word. Born in September 1953 in the Philippines, she was half Chinese, half Filipina, and full of quiet strength. She carried her culture with pride and passed that pride down through generations. As the eldest of seven siblings, she became a caretaker early on—a role she carried with her for life. She was a single mother to Odon and Oliver, a grandmother to Allyson, Naomie, Amanda, and Odion, and a great-grandmother to Malina and Romeo, who brought a whole new kind of joy to her heart. But honestly, if you knew Mama, she probably mothered you too. Her door was always open, her table always set, and her heart somehow had room for everyone. She worked tirelessly. At one point, she held three jobs just to make sure her family never went without. From her years at Target, where she made friendships that lasted a lifetime, to her final role at the airport—where she earned awards for her dedication and reliability—she did it all humbly. She never asked for applause. She simply lived for purpose. Mama had a way of making people feel safe, seen, and loved. Whether it was a warm meal, a place to stay, or just the right words, she always knew what to give—and she gave without limits. She was the problem-solver, the steady one, the person you called when you didn’t know where else to turn. In 2018, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Then, in 2020, glioblastoma—a rare and aggressive brain cancer. Even when bedridden in 2023, she still asked if you had eaten, still wanted to know how everyone was doing. Her body grew tired, but her heart never gave up. She held on—for love, for presence, for us. Mama Somie was deeply loved—and always will be. Her strength, her laughter, her sacrifices, and her care continue to echo through all of us. Many have asked how they can support our family during this time. We’ve set a goal of $30,000 to fully honor Mama Somie’s life and legacy—with dignity, tradition, and care. Your contributions will help us: Bring her home to the Philippines for her final resting place Cover burial, memorial, and transport costs Support family travel and memorials both here and abroad And give us the space to grieve without the added weight of financial worry While we’re grateful for any form of support, we want to be transparent: GoFundMe takes a percentage from every donation. To ensure that 100% of your gift goes directly toward Mama Somie’s farewell, we’re also accepting contributions via: Cash • Venmo • PayPal • Apple Pay If you’d like to give directly, please reach out to (415) 900-9698 and I’ll share the details. Whether it’s $5 or $500, every bit helps—and every gift makes a difference. Thank you for helping us bring Mama home, wrap her in love, and honor the incredible woman she was. Because someone who gave so much deserves a homecoming filled with just as much love. 💛
