Meals for the Hammer Family

Story

Message from Katie, Hi everyone, its Katie again, Lainey's mom. I wanted to share an update of our current situation. On 11/11/2025, Lainey went into Sacred Heart for her second open heart surgery. The procedure in total lasted 6 hrs, start to finish. Lainey was moved up to the PICU. During the first hour in the PICU, her surgeon and the cardiologist on the peds floor became concerned about the volume of blood lainey was loosing despite having multiple blood transfusions. 30 minutes later, Lainey was rushed back down to the O.R. for emergency surgery. They had to re-open her to find the cause of the bleeding. This was a very very scary moment for me, my husband, and our 3 other children. Once she was opened, nothing severe pointed to the cause for it, and I still dont quite understand it. But what I think happened from what I was told, was during this specific surgery, you are put on a bypass machine. While on the machine, you are put on blood thinners. Once off the bypass machine, they give a medicine to help coagulate your blood to get it to clot a-little. (Thicken up.) From my understanding, for some reason this didnt happen. Hence all the blood loss. They also said one of the many linings of the chest called the pericardium, has many small blood vessels in it, and they suspect those were where the bleeding was coming from due to being cut through for open heart surgery. So essentially multiple factors played into her blood loss. None the less it was still very scary to watch your tiny human loose that much blood. Once Lainey was closed up and brought back up to the PICU, she looked rough but better than she did the first time. She remained intubated and sedated to allow her to sleep for the night, and give her body the rest it so desperately needed. Lainey has since been extubated and is now on hi-flow oxygen. She is still remaining sedated. Her recovery has been very rough so far. Her pain is extreme and her entire body is so swollen, especially in the face and eyes. Her eyes have been so swollen they dont shut fully. It is truly heartbreaking to see. She also has been experiencing "Glenn Head" which are headaches due to the surgery. Her upper body isnt used to recieving oxygen the way they routed it to recieve now, so its taking her some time to adjust too the pressures and causing headaches at the same time which I know is contributing to her pain. I want more than anything to be able to hold my baby girl and comfort her, but I know even that, is too much strain on her little body right now. On top of all of this, my husband was laid off unexpectedly right before her surgery. We are really struggling to stay afloat on top of the mental stress we are all as a family enduring while Lainey's goes through this very hard, but necessary surgery and stay in the PICU. This time has not been easy for us, and dispite my husbands efforts to help our family, we are drowning in bills. I am unsure of how long I will need to be in Spokane, so we would truly appreciate anything to help us get by. We want to thank each and every one of you who have followed Lainey's story, shared her gofundme or donated to it. Thank you for caring about Lainey and praying for her and being there for us in our familys time of need. No words can express our gratitude for you all. Keep praying for Lainey. We have a long road ahead of us. And please share if you would like and donate if you can.
