Story
In January, Laura went in for a routine mammogram and a suspicious mass was found. After returning for an ultrasound, doctors determined that a biopsy would be necessary for further testing. On 2/3 she received the call that the mass came back cancerous. Laura was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma, stage 1B. February came along with what seemed like a million appointments - MRIs, ultrasounds, blood draws, clip placement, biopsies, and an introduction visit with a breast surgeon. On 3/20, Laura underwent surgery - lumpectomy and lymphadenectomy. The mass and surrounding tissue were removed as well as one sentinel lymph node. All margins were clear after surgery. On 4/24, Laura began her first round of chemotherapy. She will receive infusions every 2 weeks for 8 weeks. After this, she will begin a second round of chemotherapy and will receive infusions each week for 12 weeks. When both rounds of chemotherapy are complete, Laura will begin 5 weeks of radiation. Laura’s medical care team include Dr. Nelson (surgeon), Dr. Papageorgiou (medical oncologist), and Dr. Abdelhakeim (radiation oncologist). She is receiving her treatment locally at Ellis Fischel in Columbia, MO. Laura is always there for friends and family - it’s our turn to show up and support her. Take a look at the care calendar to see how you can support Laura and her husband, Chris, as they navigate treatments, appointments, and adjusting to a new normal over the next several months. Whether you are able to provide a meal, gift cards, a visit to lift her spirits, or a simple message of support - all will be greatly appreciated and mean so much.
