“When Great Trees Fall:" Love for Danielle

Chicago, IL

Story

Grief takes many shapes and comes in waves, so this is a landing page for Danielle's community to show up for her as she moves through it all. Please sign up for phonecalls and in-person hangouts because we want to make sure Danielle is held in the times/months to come. --- For those who don’t know, my father passed away from a 2.5 year battle with prostate cancer. Before he passed, I asked my Uncle what it was like to have had both parents cross over to the ancestral plane. He said at first he felt like a tree with no roots but then you find new roots. At my dad’s funeral, Venice Williams from Alice’s Garden (neat place check it out) shared the Maya Angelou poem “When Great Trees Fall” and she shared that the remaining trees reposition themselves. In the forest when great trees fall, those trees provide nutrients for the remaining trees to become great trees themselves. With this loss I feel like a sickly tree with emerald ash borer, Dutch elm disease, and spotted lantern fly lol. I hold on to the beautiful memories, lessons, and the blessing that I had the father I did/do as nutrients to get through this. Nutrients make life more resilient. If you have good parents, give them the biggest hug you can the next time you see them! --- P.S. signing up for something on the calendar does require an account with giveinkind, it is a quick process but if its cumbersome for you feel free to text Danielle directly!
