Amy's Village

Westfield, NJ

Story

If you’re here, you probably know and love my mom Amy. She’s whip smart, funny as hell, generous, and loved by so many. Last year, she was diagnosed with MGUS, a condition that often stays stable for a long time. Unfortunately just a few months later it had progressed to the next phase of the disease called smoldering myeloma and just six weeks ago, we learned that it has already progressed into multiple myeloma, a rare and serious blood cancer. She began chemo just a few weeks ago and immediately the side effects hit hard. Her body wasn’t able to tolerate the treatment and she ended up hospitalized. She is home but very weak and in quite a bit of pain. Because of this, her doctors have decided to press pause and give her time to regain her strength before they try again. There’s still a long road ahead this is just the beginning! My dad, Steve, has been right by Mom’s side through all of this, even though he’s been dealing with his own recovery from cancer treatment for the past two years. He’s working on regaining his strength but certainly not the person he was before his cancer diagnosis. So right now, we’ve got two parents recovering from and being treated for cancer under the same roof, plus two very devoted but demanding puppies. Me and Molly are splitting our time between Philly & NJ and while we’re all managing, it’s a lot. We're so fortunate that Mom and Dad are surrounded by an incredible circle of support. Their friends, neighbors, and people from their congregation have rallied around them in so many ways, bringing meals, sending meaningful care packages, and sending mom videos of your adorable grandchildren and dogs. In addition to our family of origin, we are blessed with a huge chosen family made up of friends from every stage of each of our lives, an extended network of people who’ve stepped in with love, laughter, and practical support when we have needed it most. It truly takes a village, and the one that surrounds my parents, my sister Molly, my partner Raubie, and me is incredible. Mom has been so moved by all the offers to help and this page is where we’ll share what kind of support is needed and where you can sign up to lend a hand. While she might not always be able to respond to texts or calls, mom definitely feels the love. With so much gratitude, Becka Green-Gorelick

Special Notes

A couple quick things to keep in mind: * Ahead of your scheduled visit, please text or call the morning of to make sure she’s feeling up for it that day. Cancer treatment is unpredictable, and her energy levels change fast. Visits are lovely, but short and sweet is best for now so plan for up to an hour max. * When you’re dropping off food or helping around the house, it’s okay if there’s no face time. Sometimes rest is the priority, and just knowing someone showed up is heartwarming. * If you're feeling sick, please reschedule or try a FaceTime or Zoom visit instead! *Likewise, if you're an out of town friend please feel free to schedule a Zoom call or FaceTime! * if you are scheduled to bring a meal here are moms likes and dislikes: Likes: eggplant parmesan, spanakopita, hearty soups, salmon dishes, sautéed green veggies, most pasta dishes, lasagna, knishes, kasha varnishkas, blintzes, stuffed cabbage, noodle kugel, creamed spinach, and more! Dislikes: Olives, curry, anything spicy, Indian food, sweet savory foods, stewed meat (even brisket, a Shonda!), blue cheese, very greasy foods. * Two of mom's favorite things in life are laughing and dark chocolate. Bonus points if your support includes either of these things!
