Seeing Zebras

Rockport, TX

Story

I’ve been waiting for the compulsion to write to set back in. I love writing about motherhood, spirituality, eduction in developing nations, food, family, and entertaining. What I hadn’t considered writing about- and honestly abhor the idea- is living with chronic illness. More honestly the living with than the writing about is abhorrent- but this is not a fun space. It’s not beautiful or inspiring, and it is far more vulnerable than any project I’ve undertaken. I prefer hyper-independent, being perceived as strong, and making shit happen. Perhaps, though there is relief in the authenticity and some sort of balm for giving words to what many experience. So here we are- Seeing Zebras After going through medical history with the ypteenth doctor he looked at me quietly for a moment before asking a defining question. ‘Have you heard the saying about when you hear hoof beats to think horses not Zebras?” ‘Yes”, I say. Sure my experience is about to be invalidated. ‘You are a Zebra.” And since I would like to see again and wild and unexpected things at that, Seeing Zebras is born. ——————————————— Klout- latent Auto-immune Diabetes (insulin Dependent) Celiac Recently Blinded in one eye by corneal ulcer & awaiting transplant Kidney Damage caused by treatment for corneal ulcer treatment
