Story
2025 has been a rough and shocking year for us. I will tell the story from the beginning. Mike has had Crohn's since 2008 and was diagnosed months before we were married. This is not something that many knew about. He has had ups and downs but nothing he has not been able to overcome. 2 years ago he had a small bowel obstruction and was in the hospital for 5 days. It resolved on it's own but they discovered strictures, narrowing in parts of his intestine. Fast forward to 2025.... he started the year with the same symptoms and he tried to do all the things that have worked in the past. Unfortunately, this time after 3 weeks of trying he went to the ER. We thought steroids would help, but after many days the realization of surgery became the result. The surgery ended up being a resection, which we knew was a possibility but we didn't know that inflammation was masking a mass at the end of his small intestine. The surgeon said it looks like Cancer. As you can imagine hearing the "C" word was very devastating, but we didn't know how much so. Days later Mike learned it was Adenocarcinoma and lymph nodes were involved. Days later after this big surgery Mike was released home only to devastate the girls with the news. Little did we know this news would get worse. We met with the Oncology doctor the following week and were told they are not sure if they got all the Cancer. The surgical inflammation could just be that or more Cancer. But, there was more bad news. The Cancer was not one but 2 different types-Neuroendocrine and Adenocarcinoma. The first of which is more rare and "can be aggressive". The hole we are in just got deeper and darker.
