Cancer Fucking Sucks

Colorado Springs, CO

Story

This is my dear friend Michele. This is the her story in her best friend’s words from the Go Fun Me page set up for her. I have created this page to start a meal train and any other support she may need. We are specifically looking for an alkaline diet for her (small and easy…she has little appetite) to continue to help her heal and regular meals for her family, as she is not able to cook now. Meals are only for 2. “ My name is Nina Hilton and I am reaching out far and wide in hopes to gather all the support I can for my best friend Michele Gobell's battle with an aggressive form of Pancreatic Cancer. Please read on as I do believe that Michele's story has the power to save lives through awareness. Michele complained of stomach pain back in November 2023. She went through numerous tests, however, none of them pertained to her stomach, therefore, the cancer was left undetectable. The pain persisted but got significantly worse towards mid-June. At that time, she developed a cough under the assumption it was irritation from a tube they put down her throat from a previous test they ran. We couldn't be more wrong. We went on a beautiful vacation for 10 days and she assured us that when she returned home, she would have it looked at. Upon arriving home, her stomach pain was increasingly worse and that had become the main focus of the testing she was given. On Wednesday, June 19th, while at my house, she looked at her medical portal and there were results from her test. She said it mentioned pancreatic cancer and I told her to wait until the doctor explains the results before getting upset and afraid. On Friday, June 21st, she was having a difficult time breathing so her daughter rushed her to the ER and after some tests found that her left lung was filling with fluid. They admitted her. She remained at the hospital for 3 days in which during that time they drained 1100 cc of fluid from her left lung and gave her an MRI of her stomach region. On Sunday, they had her stabilized and sent her home with oxygen while waiting for her MRI results. Friday, June 28th will always be the heaviest day for Michele and family. The Oncologist asked her to come in and accompanied by her daughter Phalan, her daughter Brittney and her husband Chris, was told that she has an aggressive form of pancreatic cancer that has metastasized in her liver, her lung and in her bloodstream. Treatment options can only provide her at the most 11 months to live with no chance of remission and to go untreated will give her perhaps 6 months of life which as we know, only God decides when to call us home. She has decisions to make and in the midst of the intense sadness and fear that surrounds her from her loved ones, she continues to try and comfort those that she loves. I want you to know her like I do. I want you to see her through my eyes. I want you to feel what others feel when they encounter her so I will share a little about her. Michele is a hospice care worker and CNA. She loves people's spirit back to life. She cares for their needs whether it be brushing their hair, doing their nails, putting essential oils on their temples and behind the ears to help alleviate headaches. Peppermint is her favorite for that sort of thing. In fact, Peppermint is the cure all if you ask her. In caring for patients with Alzheimer or Dementia, she works closely with the families to help them navigate this illness and provides information based on her extensive knowledge and experience. She has sat with patients that are afraid to die and has tenderly helped them find peace. She has helped those that have unfinished business in life to make those amends and find closure. Imagine the kind of responsibility one has when they are the ones that must remain until the very end by helping their transition from life to death! Michele has 5 grown daughters and 10 grandchildren. As a mother to her children growing up, she was the house where all the broken children went. She would open up her home and mother the motherless, nurture the sick ones and give a loving home to the homeless ones. They all became sons and daughters of the "Healer." She made a difference in each of their lives and she makes a difference in mine too. It took me 47 years to find my best friend, to find my person. She has loved all of my broken pieces back together again. We planned to grow old together, riding on the back of our husband's bikes, traveling to beautiful places and sharing intimate thoughts and feelings with one another. This is not supposed to happen! How can this happen to such a woman? It's not a question I will ever know the answer to. God, I wish I could! We need more time and in looking for more time, there could be experimental treatments that will require substantial financial resources. Her medical bills to this point are astronomical as you can imagine so we turn to you and ask for help. Please help her. Please help us to help her. Cancer does not discriminate and I hope that if you are ever faced with a terminal diagnosis that everyone that loves you will show up for you in the way we are showing up for her. My hope is that the love she gave to all the people she cared for will be the love she receives in her time of need. Whatever support you can provide will help and we need all hands on deck here. Meal trains, charity events, whatever we can do to alleviate the stress and worry that binds to such a prognosis and give her and her family help and support during this life-changing event. Thank you for taking the time to read. We appreciate you.”
