Story
Hello, my name is Megan and I’m single mother of two baby girls under the age of three. I had a house in Plum and it took me 10 years of hard work as a single mom to pay it off. On February 28th at 4 o’clock in the morning I woke up because I couldn’t breathe. I felt like I was suffocating and when I opened my eyes, Water was dripping from my eyes and I couldn’t see an inch in front of my face. I knew immediately it was a fire. We were able to escape just the clothing on our backs. When the fire department arrived, it turned out that the fire hydrants on our street and the water was not working so they had to call in a firetruck that had water from the next department over, which took even longer. My house was completely utterly Devastated and destroyed. The fire marshal said that it started in the basement in the dryer that we just bought from Lowe’s!! The dryer was not running or on as the clothes inside the dryer were not burned. The fire marshal said that it was the tiny bit of electrical current, keeping the touchscreen lit that caused the entire fire. The fire spread from the basement to the floor above it to the floor above that. It was utter destruction And what the fire and smoke didn’t destroy, the firefighters, went in with axes and completely tore out every wall every mattress every counter the fridge totally knocked over every ceiling, and everything was totally destroyed. Anything that I have ever had, and owned in my 33 years of living has now disappeared. My children’s belongings are all gone. Heirlooms are gone, including my children’s hospital bands from the days they were born or their footprints from the day they were born. Their favorite plushy that they sleep with. Irreplaceable photo albums, and ashes from loved ones. Everything is completely gone. And what makes it worse is we had to go and live in a motel and the city called me two weeks after the fire because the neighbors complained that the house look like an eyesore now in the neighborhood and what will be going to do about it. I’ve never been through something so devastating in my life. Red Cross helped with a $600 voucher which paid for a week at a hotel. The Salvation Army said they didn’t have much except vouchers which were $25 per person for clothing. We were very thankful for those little things because we only have the clothes on our backs. We started to go fund me and we also have a cash app but the most important thing right now for us is shelter. raising money to get us into a home again that is a place that we feel safe and not scared that a fire will ever happen again. Unfortunately, it was January and February that I let my insurance lapse on the house because of how expensive things were as a single mother, which was a huge mistake. But never in my wildest dreams that I think in these two months that a fire would happen. So there’s no insurance to help recover my things or my home again. I also have a cleaning business that I’ve had for six years and I have so many of the same clients from years of being able to do such good trustworthy and thorough work for them. I also have references that would gladly speak on my behalf of the work I’ve done. My number is 412-477-0737! Call or text for any cleaning services needed!
