Encouragement for Emily

Santa Rosa, CA

Story

Encouragement for Emily supports Emily Dickey and her family as they are facing a big battle. We created this page so that friends and family could receive updates on her journey as well as find out how to best help. Here is a link to a meal train if you would like to help in that way.     https://www.mealtrain.com/trains/w1826w     Gift cards for door dash, food jets, etc. are also super helpful! You will also find a link to an amazon wishlist with some items that will help make recovery life a little easier. One of the easiest ways to help may be PayPal. Then, as new needs arrive Emily is able to just take care of them right away.   We will be posting updates here as they become available. Let’s rally around her and her kiddos and show them how loved they all are! Thank you for your support!

Special Notes

UPDATES:  03/30/20 Sorry for the delay in updates! COVID-19 sure has put us into a strange time warp. What day is it? What time is it? Who knows! LOL! On March 24th, Emily had a port placed (this will live with her through the duration of treatment). That procedure went really well! Today was infusion #1. So far, so good. No visitors are allowed and she said it’s definitely a weird feeling at Kaiser right now. But the oncologist believes the benefits of the chemo outweighs the risk of catching anything.  03/04/20  Emily Met with her oncologist this morning (BTW she love’s him!). Due to the whole lymph node thing, chemotherapy is recommended. It will most likely begin early April and It will be a combination of drugs for 3 months, followed by another drug for 3 months. Radiation will follow, but for an unknown length of time. Later, this afternoon she met with the plastic surgeon (she love’s him, too! She totally lucked out!). Everything with the surgical site looks good! The drain came out (yippie!!) and showering begins tomorrow!! (#bestdayever) He confirmed that the course of fragment proposed by the oncologist is the right one, in fact he said there is really no other option. Reconstructive surgery will probably happen a year after radiation is done. Although she has been cleared to drive, she was also instructed to continue to take it easy. So I will be adding some dates to the calendar below that she could use some help.  03/03/20  When some of the  pathology reports came back, 2 (of the 3)lymph nodes showed involvement. This was quite a scare. Emily was sent in for a CT and bone scan and they both came back and showed NO cancer!! Such a HUGE relief! However, that does mean radiation and chemo are soon to come.  02/26/20  Post Op went great!! Doc said everything looks good!! Skin looks healthy and is surviving ok. Drain is doing it’s job. Hooray for more good news! 02/24/20 Emily and the kids were reunited over the weekend. Lots of snuggles were the best kind of medicine. Emily is continuing to feel pretty good. 11:00am Emily went in for a dressing change and everything looked great! She is still not in a lot of pain. Just more sore than anything.  02/21/20   6:30pm - Emily is home!!! Yippie! She should be able to get some much needed rest and enjoy lots of Netflix binging. She is so appreciative of all of the love and support from everyone. I will continue to post updates here along with any new needs as they arise.  9:00am- Emily didn’t get much sleep last night. No surprise here! Hospitals like to party round the clock. She is feeling pretty good this morning. More sore, than pain. She is hoping she will be busting outta there today. 02/20/20    8:30pm She has been admitted and is settled into a room for the night. Unfortunately, she has a roommate. (Boo 😔) She was FINALLY given some food and she was less than impressed with the spread😂 I think the pain meds are doing their job and she is feeling pretty great! Lol Fingers crossed for a good nights sleep (and for Nora hopefully sneaking in some yummy snacks!) This will be my last update for tonight.  5:30pm Emily was allowed a few visitors and they all said she was awake and alert but groggy. She was of course cracking some jokes but also expressing her gratitude for the nurses and doctors. Her pain level was relatively low at the time. They offered to release her or admit her for observation. Most likely she will chose to stay but she is currently napping again. I’ll keep you posted.  2:45pm she is out of surgery! Her surgeon said she did great and it took less time than anticipated. She is being moved to recovery. They are still undecided if she will be admitted. 10:15am Headed into Surgery. It is anticipated to take approx. 6 hours.  7:45am Surgery time was pushed back 2 hours. They will be keeping her comfortable in the meantime 7:00am In surgical waiting with the IV in. Waiting for the okay for her mom and brother to come back and visit 5:30am arrival time 02/19/20  From Emily:  02/18:20   Just before the holidays, I found a lump. January 3rd, a doctor confirmed there was something there. January 8th, a mammogram and an ultrasound led to a biopsy. January 13th we heard the news no one wants to hear. That lump was cancerous.   The days and weeks that followed have been a weird kind of whirlwind. But my family has been enveloped in an amazing amount of love and support. If we ever had a doubt about our village (we didn’t), it was gone. Surgery will be February 19th. Melissa will be assisting with posting updates as they come. We love each and every one of you so much!
