Supporting the Dublin Family

Harrisburg, NC

Story

Walt and Cat have received an outpouring of love and offers of support for their family during this unimaginable time from friends, family and local community they've met in North Carolina. The Care Calendar below as well as the various ways to send some love is being organized so their family can focus on spending as much time together and continue keeping their kids' routines as normal as possible. If you would like to show up in a way that is not listed below please reach out to me directly as Walt is sifting through a ton of medical paperwork at the moment and I'd like to lessen the amount of notifications on his phone as much as I can. You can text me at Tiffany DiEmidio (646) 469-5212 Words from Walt: “As many of you already know, Cat has been battling brain cancer with incredible strength, courage, and resilience. Despite our best efforts and hopes, her recent developments and condition have led us to an extremely challenging new phase — As of this coming Thursday, she is officially being placed in hospice care. Over the past few months, we’ve experienced a number of challenges and health scares as a result of her ongoing treatment. Her blood cell counts dipped to near zero, requiring a number of platelet and blood transfusions, which required us to stop several of her critical medications as well as her chemotherapy treatments. This, unfortunately, has allowed the cancer to spread more aggressively throughout other areas of her brain. She’s also faced challenges with blood clots and a bout of COVID-19, which led to her current hospital stay that has lasted over the past three weeks. The whole ordeal has been relentless, but as a result of the chemo’s effects on her body, the tumor growth, her current condition, and her recent health challenges, her oncology team has determined that the treatment is no longer viable and is doing her more harm than good. The decision to move to hospice was not made lightly at all… It’s a deeply emotional process that involves coming to terms with the reality of Catherine’s condition and the limits of what her oncology team can do medically. It has been a time of very intense introspection and emotion, where I’ve been reflecting on the strength and courage she has shown throughout her battle with this horrible disease. Her spirit has been an inspiration to me and everyone who knows her. Her body has fought valiantly, and sometimes, it needs to rest. Chemotherapy and some of the other treatments that she’s been exposed to, for all of the good they can do to rid the body of bad cancer cells, can have just a detrimental impact on the good ones as well. This decision does not represent an end to the fight, and as we navigate this new chapter together, our primary focus is on ensuring that Cat is surrounded by comfort, support, dignity, and love. … I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has been part of our support network. Your words of encouragement, prayers, and gestures of kindness have provided us with immense comfort and strength. As we move through this phase, your support means more than ever now. Please keep them coming, especially to Cat, as she navigates an unknown path forward.” More updates and a really sweet video of Cat can be found here: https://medium.com/@wdublin1/the-absolute-worst-blog-post-ive-ever-had-to-write-701c5ea0fcaa
