Story
Otto Taylor Schweng was born on February 9, 2024 with a TOF diagnosis. Earlier this month, Otto had a bad spell late at night and didn’t come back on his own. He had to go through a fluid resuscitation and at that point was rushed in to have an emergency full repair surgery which was originally scheduled for 2 days later. He was also on ECMO for 3 days after the surgery. After a life in the CICU and NICU, Otto and his parents are scheduled to arrive home in the next few weeks. Let's help them out by giving through gift cards and wishlists. About TOF Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) is a congenital heart defect (CHD) that involves four abnormalities in the structure of the heart. These abnormalities include: Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD): A hole in the wall (septum) that separates the two lower chambers (ventricles) of the heart. Pulmonary Stenosis: Narrowing of the pulmonary valve and the passage from the right ventricle to the pulmonary artery, which reduces blood flow to the lungs. Overriding Aorta: The aorta, the main artery that carries oxygen-rich blood to the body, is positioned above the ventricular septal defect, allowing it to receive blood from both ventricles. Right Ventricular Hypertrophy: The muscle of the right ventricle becomes thicker than normal due to the extra workload of pumping blood through the narrowed pulmonary valve. These abnormalities result in oxygen-poor blood being pumped out of the heart and into the body, leading to cyanosis (blueness of the skin) and other symptoms. Treatment usually involves surgical repair, which may be done in stages depending on the severity of the condition.
