Emerson's Fight Against ALS

Chicago, IL

Story

Emerson was diagnosed with ALS on February 21, 2020. Since March he has been unable to navigate stairs and walking inside the home is minimal with an up-walker. Just recently Teresa can no longer leave Emerson alone, so she is unable to work. Emerson's condition continues to worsen with each day, he does have good days from time to time. He is having more trouble speaking lately. There is currently a Go Fund Me set up to support Emerson & Teresa in this difficult time. This page will be helpful in aspects outside of donating money. There is a calendar for people to stop by and visit Emerson (we would request that visits be a minimum of 1 hour as the preparation before and after visitors isn't easy either, this would also allow Teresa a break as well). Another option is to purchase gift cards which are located in the wish list. If you are interested in cooking meals that will be located on the calendar. As you know Emerson has always been the cook of the family and is now unable to do so. Donations are also available here through PayPal. The expenses are unknown at this time. Not to get into their personal finances, however Emerson has not received any income since March 2020 due to his ALS and is not due any disability begins the end of August 2020, there is no back pay. Medical has been COBRA which we all know can be expensive. Emerson will qualify for Medicare on July 1, but Teresa will have to keep the COBRA. Please understand these are difficult times, especially with COVID-19 and we must keep Emerson safe. On behalf of Emerson and Teresa we appreciate everything that has been done to help ease the situation and we can't thank you enough for the support! LaWanda Cooper Daughter

Special Notes

If you sign up for walks, please know this takes at least 2 people to get Emerson in and out of the house. When entering the home you will be required to take off shoes, wear a mask and wash your hands. (covid-19)
