JD’s leg surgery

Laurel, MS

Story

JD is a 12 year old boy who was diagnosed with ADHD at 5 years old. He had other signs of Sensory Processing Disorder and was later diagnosed with Idiopathic Toe Walking and now Aspergers. He walked on his toes out of habit and because it “felt good (sensory seeking behavior).” We were told he did not have any injuries at the time, and that maybe he would grow out of it. Several rounds of physical therapy and gait training did not solve his toe walking. After a few years, he now has a lot of pain and is unable to put his left foot down completely on the ground. He has tightened heel strings that will be released or loosened and tight hamstrings that will be loosened on both legs. He also has plantar fasciitis in his left foot and some damage in that foot that will be remedied surgically. He will be in a wheelchair for a couple weeks and then on a walker and crutches for several weeks/months after that, which will be followed by orthotic braces for several months to a year. I am positive physical therapy will be required as well and additional gait training as essentially he will be learning to walk all over again. He is excited and looking forward to buying a new pair of shoes after his feet heal. For the past couple years, a pair of shoes has lasted just a couple months at most before beginning to tear up from the stress of the toe walking.

Special Notes

Please no sick visitors. JD loves books, his Nintendo 3DS, XBox360, and all things Pokémon or My Hero Academia. He loves fuzzy blankets, cheeseburgers w/ mayo & ketchup, and pugs and kitties (although we have neither currently). His favorite snacks are Cheetos, baked lays, granola bars, heath bars, Oreos, and root beer. He also likes bottled water and drink tubes, especially the Hawaiian Punch brand ones.
