Story
On Sunday, September 15, 2024, I got a message from my Aunt Carolyn. My mom had left a distressed voicemail on Carolyn's phone and Carolyn had not been able to get a hold of mom since. I jumped in the car and began calling as well, and when I got no response, I called the police requesting an immediate welfare check. When the state troopers got there, they found her car outside but got no response. We authorized them to force entry. They found my mom on the floor of her room, only partially conscious. Presuming dehydration from a Covid sinus Infection, the police requested an ambulance to bring Daphne to the Chambersburg Hospital. At the hospital, however, tests revealed that the situation was far more serious. Around 1AM, Daphne was flown via helicopter to Wellspan York Hospital, where she was met by a team of neurologists and nurses. After a slew of medical tests and scans, it was discovered that Daphne had a hematoma on the right side of her brain. It was large and was pushing her brain to the side of the skull. She was immediately scheduled for brain surgery. The wait was unbearable. After hours of pacing, the surgeon found my brother and I in the waiting room to give us the report. They were able to do the surgery, however he ran into something very unexpected. Upon opening Daphne's skull, the doctor found that it was not just blood, but a large amount of pus and infection. The surgeon commented that he had never seen anything like it before. The surgeon cleaned it out as best he could and put mom on a battery of broad range antibiotics, while they continued testing. The Infectious Disease team was brought in, along with ENT's and neurologists. The following days were filled with additional surgery, innumerable tests, and countless medications. Yesterday, my mom was finally moved from the ICU to the main floor of the hospital but she has a long road ahead of her. As of now, she has not been able to move her left side. She still speaks very little, though that changes day to day. She is in a lot of pain. The next steps will be for my mom to go to an inpatient acute rehab center. After that is very uncertain. We do know she will not be going back to her house for a long time - possibly ever. There is a LOT up in the air. But in the meantime, we are working to figure out the best care and support for mom. I am hoping this site/app can be used as a hub for information and coordination of care from the large army of Daphne Supporters.
