Story
On the evening of September the 13th my 8 year old nephew Shane was brutally mauled by two loose dogs while at his Grandmother's house. Shane was taken by ambulance to Sutter Roseville where the trauma unit made the decision to transport him to UC Davis due to his critical condition. Shane sustained extensive injuries to his back, side and lower body. It was discovered the dogs had exposed his bowels and punctured both his bowel and his liver in addition to horrendous damage to his lower extremities. After enduring many traumatic medical evaluations to determine the course of treatment, all while conscious, it was decided that Shane would need surgery to wash his organs, begin the repair of his legs and back and determine whether he would need a colostomy bag. Miraculously Shane made it through the 4 hour surgery and though the dogs did in fact puncture his bowels, the Doctors said the intestines appeared healthy so they elected to repair the damage and loosely close the wounds without the need for the colostomy bag. The wounds to Shane's legs and back have been packed, loosely closed and have drains to prevent abscesses as they begin to heal; but will likely require future surgeries once enough tissue regenerates to allow skin grafts. In addition to the trauma he endured during the initial attack, Shane's road to recovery will be a long and uncertain one and both he and his mother, Mindy, who has remained by his side comforting and reassuring him along wth diligently advocating for his care needs despite the shock and devastation she herself has gone through could use all of the support they can get. As of now, it is unclear when Shane will be able to return home. In addition to future surgeries, extensive physical therapy is needed to get him walking again. Mindy is Shane's sole care provider and is currently staying round the clock at UC Davis unable to work so easing the current and future financial burden whether that be a gift card for a meal, items to cheer Shane up and ward off boredom as he's stuck in a hospital bed, medical expenses etc would be greatly appreciated on behalf of Mindy. I was with Shane and Mindy when they brought him to UC Davis and I can tell you what I saw was shocking, terrifying, gruesome and tragic but I can also tell you Shane is a brave fighter and in true Shane Daniels fashion, was more cooperative than most adults throughout this. It was one of the most heartbreaking scenarios I have ever bore witness to and something that no 8 year old kid nor parent should ever have to go through. I can't think of a family more deserving to be surrounded by love and support during a time such as this and from the bottom of my heart thank everyone who is able to support them in anyway whether that be by a donation, a prayer, a happy thought, or spreading the word of this platform. Thank you and I will be providing updates on Shane's condition and road to recovery on here along the way. -Kaylene
Special Notes
Mindy was reluctant to receive this type of support, though it is needed now more than ever considering the long, uncertain road ahead for Shane and his ongoing care needs so please feel free to share a link to this page with friends and family but respectfully refrain from posting on social media. If you would like to leave a message for Mindy or Shane on here I will be more than happy to relay it to them or feel free to message me personally to do so. Thank you.
