Story
Lori Thomas Hicks has spent a lifetime lifting others. As a beloved special education advocate, former Atascadero principal, children’s book author, and fierce protector of her family, she’s poured her heart into students, teachers, and loved ones for decades. In recent months, Lori made the courageous decision to retire early from the county SELPA to care for her aging parents full-time. Her father recently passed away under hospice care—and just days later, Lori suffered a serious femur fracture. The timing is devastating. She now faces months of painful recovery and mobility challenges while still supporting for her mother at home. Many friends have asked how they can help. Lori is deeply grateful for the outpouring of love—but she’s also feeling overwhelmed by how to respond to everyone individually. This space is an organized way for her loved ones to offer support, especially through meal delivery and DoorDash gift cards.
Special Notes
During her recovery, the doctor has encouraged her to have a protein and calcium rich diet to help bone production. She also needs to stay away from foods high in sugar and simple carbohydrates (ex bread).
